Birthing from Within Partners with Doulas of Duluth: Introducing Christine D’Esposito

It all started when Christine was living in California and her roommate got pregnant. She was hanging out with a lot of hippies at the time and everyone was doing home births. She got to watch her friend go through the transformation that comes with pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent of a baby girl. That little girl just graduated from college last year.

Christine studied with Pam England and under her mentorship developed her own style of supporting birthing parents as a doula, rooted in the Birthing from Within (BfW) philosophy.

Being part of the Birthing from Within community is part of a larger way of life. In BfW, birthers and birth workers alike rely on three ways of knowing – primordial, modern, and knowing thyself. These ways of knowing bring in the rational mind rooted in studying data-driven, scientific insights; and inner knowing through both intuition and ancient wisdom.

After her time in California, Christine worked in the Portland, OR area and has supported hundreds of births in home and hospital settings across her 20 year career. She was part of a birth team at a hospital that ensured that every birthing person had access to a doula. Eventually she became one of the stewards of the BfW method as Pam England moved on to the next phase of her life’s work.

Christine has moved to Duluth in the past year and is looking forward to offering the wisdom of Birthing from Within – and her own deep experience – to the Duluth community.

Zomi Bloom

Zomi has been passionate about childbirth for as long as she can remember. In college she studied healthcare administration and later earned an MBA with a focus on healthcare management, always with an eye towards critically evaluating the American healthcare system for opportunities to serve populations and communities more equitably. Birthing people in the US experience poorer perinatal outcomes compared to other similar nations, and those of BIPOC origin are even more at risk. Research shows that doulas and midwives can center the voices of birthing people and support better healthcare outcomes. Zomi wants to be part of the change that levels the playing field and ensures birthing people are cared for and listened to. Zomi completed DONA International childbirth and lactation training  and is on a path of continuous learning to provide the best expertise and service possible.

Zomi has had the privilege of birthing three inspiring humans with the support of nurse midwives, and with her  third had the opportunity to break in the new-at-the time freestanding birth center in N. Charleston, SC. During her own pregnancies and births, she found that following her intuition and her body's instincts led her down the right path. Zomi values the expertise that the modern medical system offers with respect to high risk intervention when needed, while also looking to a future in which we can match the level of intervention to the needs of the birthing person and their situation. As a doula, her goal is to help each birthing person feel that their voice has been heard, that they have been supported, and their choices respected.

Her  other interests include reading, creating poetry, hiking, yoga, petting furry creatures, and laughing at silly animal videos with her kids.
