As far back as I can remember, pregnancy has always fascinated me. When I was a child, the concept of growing a tiny human inside a person’s belly was unfathomable. While growing older, I began to understand the process of pregnancy and everything it entails. I learned that a woman’s body is incredibly powerful and capable of many wonderful things. I remember fully understanding when my mother was pregnant with my youngest brother; I had the absolute pleasure of watching her belly grow and to be a part of her awe-inspiring journey. Then as a high schooler I had friends get pregnant, and it was then that I knew I wanted to offer enrichment to as many mothers’ journeys as possible. I am so thankful to say I have many incredible people in my life who I have sat beside through their adventure of bringing life into this world.
I used to think a doula and a midwife were the same thing until a friend of mine was chatting about a baby I helped deliver, and she asked me if I ever thought of making a career out of it. She mentioned the training it entailed, and I learned the difference. As I began to delve into all of the possibilities these incredible opportunities presented, I didn’t see one birth doula that looked like me in our area. Growing up in Northern Minnesota, there isn’t much diversity to be seen amongst healthcare professionals.
So I thought to myself, “Self. Let’s do this.” Boy, was that a great decision.
I thrive knowing I can ride along with every twist and turn pregnancy can throw at a mother. Many people plan for the birth but don’t really think of how their life will change – as a birth and postpartum doula, it’s my passion to help adjust to life with a baby or multiple children.
This road trip might be a long one, but I have a great mixtape to listen to on the way.
